Personal Branding Tips for Introverts. Personal branding is for introverts too and there are many ways of branding and marketing yourself as an introvert.
Many introverts have dismissed the option of building and marketing their personal brands, believing that such activities are best left to the extroverts of the world. Yet this means that they often miss out on the credit they are due.
I believe that there are many ways of branding and marketing yourself, some which will appeal to introverts too.
Despite the fact that the modern workplace seems to be geared more towards extroverts (think open-plan offices, group strategy sessions and team projects), introverts can achieve greater career success by learning how to use their own unique talents and strengths to achieve their business goals.
Introverts tend to focus on doing great work, but often don’t take the credit for what they’ve done. They need to find ways of communicating the value they add, which begins with understanding one’s unique strengths.
Ask yourself: What makes you special? What is it that differentiates you from others in your field? What can you offer that nobody else can? This is a starting point for creating your personal brand and learning to market it. This is your unique selling proposition (USP). You need to discover your USP to build a personal brand, whether you are an introvert or an extrovert.
Extroverts get their energy from spending time with other people, while introverts get their energy from spending time on their own, which is when they think deeply and come up with their most creative ideas. In order to brand and market yourself successfully as an introvert, you need to learn to balance time spent doing your work and problem-solving with talking about what you’re doing. In other words, it doesn’t help you in your career if you come up with a brilliant idea in your time alone but neglect to share it with others so that it can be implemented and you can be recognized for your contribution.
Start recording your accomplishments and collecting accolades and testimonials that you receive from managers, clients and colleagues. This is a very useful way of communicating your value to others as an introvert because you don’t have to brag about your success – you can use the words of others instead.
Consider working with a coach or mentor to help you to articulate your accomplishments in a way that makes you feel comfortable. One-on-one mentorship is a brilliant way for introverts to receive business coaching without being too far outside of their comfort zone.
If you struggle to make yourself heard in large gatherings, start to follow up with key individuals after meetings to confirm your points, views and contributions. This not only ensures you communicate your ideas in a way that suits you, but it also gives you a chance to build relationship with key people in a way that makes you stand out from the crowd without needing to shout.
Focus on building and nurturing relationships in the way you know best and learn to leverage personal marketing opportunities that you will enjoy, whether this means submitting articles on your subject of expertise to professional journals, participating in online forums, or using social media to build your profile.
